Woodworking Fundamentals 1

This two day course covers the basic hand tools used in fine furniture making. Students will learn how to determine a good tool from a bad tool, what tools are really necessary for furniture making, how the tools work, how to sharpen and care for the tools and how to use the tools properly and safely.

Students will make a series of small, useful items using only hand tools. Students will also cut, by hand, several basic woodworking joints. All materials for this class are supplied for the students.

Each student must supply his, or her, own: safety glasses and hearing protection; combination or machinist square; bevel gauge; bench chisels; carvers mallet; dovetail saw; marking gauge; smooth plane or jack plane; block plane; and tape measure or folding rule. If you do not have the tools on the list, don’t panic. We have plenty of tools for your use in class.

Woodworking Fundamentals 2

This two day course covers the basic machines used in fine furniture making. Students will learn how to determine a good machine from a bad machine, what machines are really necessary for furniture making, how the machines work, how to care for the machines, and how to use the machines properly and safely.

Using various woodworking machines, each student will make a simple tapered leg footstool. All materials for this class are supplied for the students.

Woodworking Fundamentals 3

This three day course begins with a lesson on how to make shop drawing and layout sticks. The class then moves to Hearne Hardwoods to learn how to properly select and purchase lumber for all your woodworking projects. Students then learn about woodworking joinery and begin buidling a one drawer stand that they can take home.

Lumber and hardware for the one drawer stand are not included in the price of this class. Lumber for this project may be purchased using the drop down list below or purchased on your own and shipped to our shop at least four weeks prior to the class. Hardware for this project may be purchased through one of the vendors on the resources page or in your class information packet.

Woodworking Fundamentals 1,2,3

This six day program combines all three of our Fundamentals courses into one fun filled, action packed week of woodworking! Even if you’ve never worked wood before, after one week you’ll have the basic skills needed to start your woodworking hobby or career. As a student, you will learn about hand tools and how to use them. You will learn about the basic machines used in today’s fine woodworking projects. Your skills will all come together with lessons on how to create shop drawings, choose the right lumber for your project as well as a good working knowledge of the basic woodworking joints. Students begin building a one drawer stand that they can take home.

Materials are not included in the class fee. Carving Fundamentals

Most woodworkers are mystified by carving. In this two day course, you’ll learn the basic techniques common to nearly all woodcarving. You’ll learn how to sharpen and care for your carving tools. You’ll learn how to layout and carve simple concave and convex shells and fans.

Students will need to supply their own safety glasses, hearing protection and dust mask or respirator. Students will also need to supply their own bench chisels as well as a #15 v-parting tool (6mm or smaller) and two #8 gouges (one 7mm and one 10mm). If you have more carving tools, bring them along as they will most likely be helpful.

Miniature Inlaid Chest with Glen Huey

Build a miniature inlaid Chester County chest with guest instructor Glen Huey. This chest is a reproduction of the original Darlington Chest circa. 1740. with ball feet and line and berry inlay reflective of Chester County furnishing during this period. Chest dimensions:

This class may include an afternoon trip to the Winterthur Museum to view the original depending upon availability.

Straight legged footstool

Dovetail Blitz

Get ready to dovetail! This two day class is designed to really get you dovetailing. You’ll cut more dovetails in two days than you have probably cut in you life. All with the intent to tune up your technique and speed up the process. The goals are simple: fix your sawing and waste removal techniques; give you some powerful time and labor saving tips; get you cutting consistently good dovetails every time right out of the box.

We’ll focus on through and half blind dovetails. This will give you the edge you need when it comes to case and drawer construction. Whether you’re a pins first or tails first person, this class will help you cut better dovetails.

Improved sawing technique
Improved waste removal techniques

Newport Blockfront Chest

For modern woodworkers the Newport blockfront chest represents the height of craftsmanship in 18th Century America. The balance of design, joinery and flawless carving certainly put the Goddards and Townsends at the top of the furniture making trade.

This first week of this two week class will take place in July. We will concentrate on case construction with the primary goal of leaving drawer construction and prep work to be completed at home prior to the second week.

The second week will take place in ~~September~~ July (the following week) where we will focus on carving the shells for the top drawer of the chest.

Turning Fundamentals

If you’ve made more straight and tapered legs than you care to recall, it’s time to introduce a new skill to your repertoire, turning.

In this two day class you’ll explore spindle turning on the wood lathe. You’ll learn how to produce turned legs and other furniture elements to help expand your woodworking.

Advanced Carving

In this two day class you’ll step up your carving skills on the road to becoming a master. You’ll explore the sculptural aspects of a ball and claw foot as you carve a typical Philadelphia style foot in class. Once your ball and claw foot is complete, you’ll move on to adding some acanthus leaf carving to the knees of the cabriole leg.

While not the most complex thing a wood carver can make, the ball and claw foot remains an icon of carving mastery. You’ll learn about regional variations of ball and claw feet. You’ll learn how to properly layout and carve this quintessential period foot. You’ll learn about various styles of Rococo designs typically used to adorn the knees of cabriole legs.

How to determine the regional design differences between ball and claw feet
how to layout and carve acanthus leaf on the knees of cabriole legs

Furniture Maker’s Tool Cabinet

Everyone needs a place to put their tools. Storing your tools properly keeps them sharp and in good working order but no one says your cabinet can’t look good and be well constructed. Why not make something to hold your tools that shows off your woodworking skills and highlights some figured wood?

Inlaid bowl with Geoffrey Noden

This stands to be one of the most fun classes of the year. You’ve probably heard about the Noden Inlay Razor (if not, you just haven’t been paying attention) which is revolutionizing inlay. Here’s your chance to try one out, or learn how to use yours if you’ve already got one, directly from the master himself. Geoffrey is not only a master with this innovative tool, he invented it.

Each student will inlay a wall clock and a picture frame using the Noden Inlay Razor. If you’ve already got one, bring it along and learn how to use it to its fullest potential. If you don’t have one, Geoffrey will be bringing Razors for everyone to try.

Materials for this class are included in the class fee. You may use your own lumber but it must be shipped to our shop at least four weeks prior to the class.

Molding planes with Matt Bickford

Stop making compromises with your router. Stop getting “close enough”. Learn how to use some of the most abundant moulding planes of the past to get the exact edge you are after. Hollows and rounds do not make specific profiles. They make specific arcs. Learn to transform these few arcs into scores of various profiles. From layout to execution, this weekend class will focus on creating various mouldings with these extraordinarily versatile planes.

The class will start off with maintaining the cutting edge, then move to laying out and ultimately sticking (planing) several mouldings that will range from simple coves and ovolos through ogees, cymas and various combinations. The class will focus on hollows and rounds sized 6 and 10 along with an unfenced rabbet plane. Students will have the opportunity to bring their own performing planes or they can use newly made planes by M. S. Bickford, planemaker. Students will also have the opportunity to use a larger range of planes.

Each student will leave with a picture frame (or several) and the ability to transfer mouldings he or she sees in person or print into wood and onto their project. Students will also have the option to bring in a complex profile and stock for a piece on which they are currently working but cannot yet execute.

A third, optional day is now offered in which the class will delve further into these seemingly mysterious planes with the instruction of Master Cabinetmaker and Carver Charles Bender, learn to carve complex embellishments such as egg and dart upon the mouldings they have already created.

The third day is strictly optional for those who wish to expand on the learning of the first two days of the class. The third day may only be purchased in addition to the two day class. All other registrations for the third day will be cancelled. Matt Bickford may be present for this 3rd day of class dependent upon scheduling.

Sign up today – this is a great opportunity to learn the use of these extremely versatile planes- and learn a little about how they are made. At the end of the weekend Matt will make available for sale some of the actual planes you will be using.

Veneer and Inlay

This two day class covers the basics of veneering and inlay. Highly figured veneer and contrasting inlay can add dimension, depth and decoration for your pieces. Most woodworkers don’t know where to begin with veneer and inlay but this class will help get you started.

The techniques are simple to grasp and the results can be dramatic. If you are looking to step up your woodworking skills to the next level, this is the class for you.

Hammer veneering
Bookmatching and slip matching veneers for dramatic effects
How to make edge banding
Sand shading

Advanced Dovetailing

Dovetails are the benchmark by which a woodworker is judged. In this 2 day class learn how to make complex dovetail joints by hand. This class is for the experienced dovetailer who wants to take joinery skills to a higher level.

Pennsylvania Painted Wall Cupboard

This project is perfect for someone looking to learn some basic case and door construction.

You’ll get a chance to work on your dovetailing skills while constructing the case. Keeping the case and face frame square can be a challenge but we’ll show you methods that will make it simple.

Whether you’ve never made a door or if you’ve made and hung hundreds, this class will help you get it right the first time and every time.

We will be finishing the cupboards in class. You’ll learn how to do some basic paint decoration on your cabinet.

Lolling Chair

The lolling, or Martha Washington, chair provides a simple yet elegant project for the budding woodworker to hone their skills. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to make a chair but were intimidated by the joinery, a lolling chair is the perfect project for practicing those chair building skills.

An upholstered frame with a trapezoidal seat and angled rear legs provides ample opportunity to work on angled and curved mortise and tenon joinery without the pressure of exposed and finished joinery.

Chair design and proportioning

Each student will inlay a wall clock and a picture frame using the Noden Inlay Razor. If you’ve already got one, bring it along and learn how to use it to its fullest potential. If you don’t have one, Geoffrey will be bringing Razors for everyone to try.

Materials for this class are included in the class fee. You may use your own lumber but it must be shipped to our shop at least four weeks prior to the class.

Each student must supply his, or her, own: safety glasses and hearing protection; combination or machinist square; bevel gauge; bench chisels; carvers mallet; dovetail saw; marking gauge; smooth plane or jack plane; block plane; and tape measure or folding rule.

· September 14 & 15

The shop opens at 8:30 am. Class begins at 9:00 am. A coldcut lunch and soft drinks are provided. Class ends at 4:30 pm. The shop remains open until 5:30 pm.

Some of the skills you will learn in this class:

· Setting up and using the Inlay Razor

· How to customize your pieces with inlay

· How to create a nearly endless variety of inlay using the Noden Inlay Razor

A third, optional day is now offered in which the class will delve further into these seemingly mysterious planes with the instruction of Master Cabinetmaker and Carver Charles Bender, learn to carve complex embellishments such as egg and dart upon the mouldings they have already created.

Sign up today – this is a great opportunity to learn the use of these extremely versatile planes- and learn a little about how they are made. At the end of the weekend Matt will make available for sale some of the actual planes you will be using.
